THIS IS A LITTLE “BONUS” BETWEEN CHAPTERS… REAL STUFF COMING IN A DAY OR TWO
February 18, 2011

Phyllis Summers Newman, to Phyllis Seasonless Newman, I’m truly going mad. Not like all the other times I’ve falsely complained to you. This is for as real as real can be.

OK, here’s the story: For the last few years, there’s been a character on “The Young and the Restless” (a very popular soap opera)… who’s been called Phyllis Newman… but not always. From what I read on Wikipedia… she, at one point married a man named Newman. Hence… hence. Two actresses have played her. She’s no longer married to the Newman boy… so now you see her name as Phyllis Summers Newman. I’m just not smart enough to follow the vagaries of this epic. All I know… here it comes… is that if you go to PhyllisNewman.com, yes, you get my blog and other things… but… but if you Google “Phyllis Newman” you get an avalanche… a cavalcade of the fictitious Phyllis Newman. Now we zoom over to YouTube and we find a few tasteful, fabulous videos of me… and then thousands of videos that claim, “Phyllis Newman Goes to Jail,” “Phyllis Newman Arrested at Her Own Wedding,” and other gems of that ilk… that’s the ilk… that’s completely confusing my legions of fans who are beginning to confuse us… I, myself, am confused. Am I a real and slightly senior actress… with a long and interesting history… or am I a dishy redhead who does lots of stuff with lots of people… or am I both? What if cyberspace turns us into each other… what if they sent me her salary in exchange for my name?

The name "Phyllis Newman" should never have gotten past the director, the producers, or the CBS legal department.
A letter written to everyone involved - Phyllis has the list - with a cc of each one to the legal department should merit a very fast response. The fact that a contract exists to allow a jewelry collection to be called "The Phyllis Newman Collection" is absolutely the last straw! Any judge would be sympathetic to Phyllis!

Although I'm a long-time viewer of Y & R and have met the actress who currently plays the character until you mentioned it I had never confused the two! I don't think there's much overlap in fan base so you probably have nothing to worry about! ;)

Ms. Newman, I am so glad to see that you are no longer so upset with this discovery, but are beginning to see the humor in this.

Just think of the rich comic possibilities here; I believe that, with this posting, you are sitting on something wonderful:

"I, myself, am confused. Am I a real and slightly senior actress… with a long and interesting history… or am I a dishy redhead who does lots of stuff with lots of people… or am I both? What if cyberspace turns us into each other… what if they sent me her salary in exchange for my name? ."

Cue Ms. Newman to write (and ultimately sing) "The Story of Po' Me and Faux Me"; parody of FOLLIES' "The Story of Lucy and Jessie," (originally sung by a character named ...!)
